A Word From Dr. Fred Ansell

Dear Colleagues:

For over a decade, we have communicated through this monthly letter. My intent was that it be informative and supportive. I have learned a lot while thinking through what I've wanted to share each month, and I've appreciated your feedback. My status is changing, so the author of this piece will also change. Below is the letter sent to the churches for your information.

It is with a degree of sadness that I send this letter. After years of chronic pain and increasing health concerns I have decided to take disability retirement. During my hospitalization last spring I applied for disability through our American Baptist safety net, MMBB, and it was recently granted. Chronic kidney failure due to a cholesterol medication allergy does not allow me to take pain medication for sclerosis, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis and other degenerative bone diseases. Last winter I discovered a malignant melanoma and subsequent chemo therapy compromised my immune system resulting in massive infection and congestive heart failure. I believe the worst of the health issues are behind me, and I’m making progress. However, I am no longer able to fill the Executive Minister position the way I believe it should be done.

This is another critical time for American Baptists in the denomination and in the Central Region. You have a strong Region staff which will continue to provide support and guidance. Our Rules of Procedure indicate that the Associate Executive Minister will function as the Acting Executive Minister until an Interim Executive Minister is called. Dr. Steve Van Ostran has accepted that role as of the first of this month.

It is also an exciting time for American Baptists. We see God at work all around us. I will deeply miss working alongside you in this ministry. It has been a humbling experience to be called to four distinct ministries in this Region. I have been richly blessed by many people through my association with our churches. I wish I could tell each of you personally how you have touched my life. I will constantly keep you and your ministry in my prayers. American Baptists have had a vital witness in communities across the Central Region. We are a strong association of churches for the cause of Christ. May your ministry be fulfilling, may it grow in healthy ways.

In your striving to care for God’s people, attending to those on the journey, reaching for those who need the Christian family and administering the congregation you serve, don’t neglect yourself. Rest, pray, exercise and find ways to stay healthy and in tune with God, your loved ones and yourself.

Always with Hope,

Fred A. Ansell
Executive Minister
